The Benefits of Living in the Boarding House for International Students

Boarding and homestay are two different types of accommodation options for international students coming to Australia for secondary studies. At Melbourne Girls Grammar, we choose to only offer boarding as we find that option much more beneficial for the students.

Boarding houses offer a unique sense of community and a strong family atmosphere. At MGGS, our boarders are made up of students from various year levels and cultural backgrounds, creating a diverse and inclusive environment. About 25% to 30% of our boarders come from overseas and the balance are Australian regional students.

Living in a boarding house gives students the opportunity to develop their independence and life skills, with the support of friendly residential staff and older students who are always willing to help new boarders settle in.

Every student living in the Boarding House remembers their first day, so they are always ready to help others through their first few weeks at MGGS” explains Dimity Harris, MGGS’s International Student Co-ordinator.

The Boarding House location, directly on the School grounds in the heart of Melbourne, makes it easy for students to attend classes without having to worry about transport and commuting. Boarders also have access to the School’s library and a spacious desk area in their room for study purposes. Of course, food is really important for families sending their child to study in Australia. In a boarding house, there is obviously more choice and variety than in a homestay environment. The fully serviced kitchen and dining room provide a social atmosphere for boarders at mealtimes.

One of the most important benefits of boarding over homestay is the opportunity to improve one’s English language skills. Boarding provides a full immersion experience into the culture of MGGS and Melbourne, and by living and communicating with native English speakers, students become proficient in the language much faster than in a homestay environment. Opportunities to live in a small family setting are also available if a boarder takes special leave with their Local Support Person (LSP).

Furthermore, MGGS is conveniently located near the city and next to the Royal Botanic Gardens, providing students with opportunities for weekend activities and allowing them to connect and build friendships beyond their school experience. In conclusion, boarding is the best option for international students at MGGS, offering a unique and enriching experience, both academically and socially.
